5.2 Hypoxia and Respiratory Failure Flashcards
What is hypoxia?
Oxygen deficiency at the tissues
What is the result of hypoxia?
Ischaemia
Necrosis
How can hypoxia be tested for?
Pulse oximeter
Arterial blood gas analysis
What is hypoxaemic hypoxia?
Poor oxygenation in lungs.
What is anaemic hypoxia?
Normal pO2 but insufficient haemoglobin to carry O2.
What is stagnant hypoxia?
Reduced delivery of O2 due to poor perfusion
What is cytotoxic hypoxia?
O2 delivery adequate but tissues unable to utilise O2
What is type 1 respiratory failure?
Not enough oxygen enters the blood. CO2 removal not compromised
What is type 2 respiratory failure?
Not enough oxygen enters the blood and CO2 cannot leave the blood.
What are the causes of respiratory failure?
Ventilation failure
Poor diffusion across membrane
V/Q mismatch
How is respiratory failure managed?
Treat cause of respiratory failure
Assisted ventilation
Oxygen therapy
What are the clinical features of respiratory failure?
Exercise intolerance Tachypnoea Confusion Central cyanosis Drowsy
