5.2 Asbestos Surveilance Program Flashcards
What does AMSP stand for?
Asbestos Medical Surveillance Program (AMSP).
What are the characteristics of asbestos?
Fibrous mineral which may contain iron, magnesium, calcium or sodium,
Fireproof,
Acid resistant,
High Tensile Strength,
Good heating and electrical insulation properties,
Moderate/good chemical resistance,
Flexible properties,
Heat Resistant from 500 - 1500 degrees Celsius.
What are the two types of asbestos?
Friable,
Non-friable.
What is friable asbestos?
Can be crumbled, pulverized or reduced to powder by hand pressure.
Where can friable asbestos be found?
Acoustic Insulation,
Pipe Lagging,
Sheet gasket material used in high temperature applications.
What is non-friable asbestos?
Cannot be crumbled, pulverized or reduce to powder by hand pressure.
What are examples of non-friable asbestos?
Brake and clutch linings,
Floor tiles and adhesives,
Gaskets.
Asbestos insulation or other asbestos-containing materials in good condition are generally not what?
A health hazard when properly secured and unlikely to be disturbed.
Bound asbestos materials, such as gaskets, floor coverings, and cements are not what?
Generally a health hazard unless work activities destroy their matrix.
What are specific work activities that disturb the make-up of asbestos materials?
Punching,
Grinding,
Sanding,
Machining.
What is normal asbestos deterioration?
Asbestos fibers are released into the air.
The loosely bound fibers are pulverized or easily crumbled creating microscopic contaminants that have been identified as a health hazard.
What are the diseases caused by asbestos?
Lung cancer,
Asbestosis.
What are the two types of lung cancer caused by asbestos?
Malignant Mesothelioma,
Mesothelioma.
What is Malignant Mesothelioma?
Tumor which lines the chest and abdominal cavity.
Suspected to also cause cancer of GI tract.
What is Mesothelioma?
Is rarely found except in those exposed to asbestos.
What is the time period for Mesothelioma?
10 – 45 years later.
Asbestos exposure combined with ____ drastically increases the risk of developing lung cancer?
Smoking.
What is Asbestosis?
Characterized by fibrosis (scarring) of the lung,
Progressively worsening disease of the lung,
Recognized as disabling or even fatal occupational disease.
What is the Ship’s Force Protocol responsibility when it comes to asbestos?
Repair and removal of materials that contain non-friable asbestos containing material.
All Navy ships have what type of asbestos?
Non-friable.
What does EART stand for?
Emergency Asbestos Removal Team.
What is the EART’s responsibility when it comes to asbestos?
Minor repair and removal of friable asbestos containing materials.
The following afloat commands shall maintain an EART except for what?
Any ships whose keel was laid prior to 1980.
Ship’s Force Protocol Responsibilities:
Safety Officer?
Ensure that ship’s personnel are trained to accomplish the job,
Ensure that no asbestos containing materials are introduced onto the ship.
