When the compound contains a metal and a non metal:
The name of the metal is given first. The name of the non metal is given after but ending with -ide.
When the compound is made of two non metals:
If one is hydrogen, that is named first. Otherwise the one with the lower group number comes first. Then the name of the other non-metal, ending with -ide.
What does the formula of giant structures tell you?
In giant structures like sodium chloride and silicone dioxide, the formula tells you the ratio of the ions or atoms in the compound.
What does the formula of a molecular compound tell you?
In a molecular compound, the formula tells you exactly how many atoms are bonded together in each molecule.
What is the valency of an element?
The valency of an element is the number of electrons its atoms lose, gain or share, to form a compound.
Group I
In forming a compound, the atoms lose 1 electron. So the valency of the element is 1.
Valency of Group II
In forming a compound, the atoms lose 2 electrons. So the valency of the element is 2.
Group III
In forming a compound, the atoms lose 3 electrons. So the valency of the element is 3.
Group IV
In forming a compound, the atoms share 4 electrons. So the valency of the element is 4.
Group V
In forming a compound, the atoms gain or share 3 electrons. So the valency of the element is 3.
Group VI
In forming a compound, the atoms gain or share 2 electrons. So the valency of the element is 2.
Group VII
In forming a compound, the atoms gain or share 1 electron. So the valency of the element is 1.
Group 0
Do not form compounds
Hydrogen
In forming a compound, the atoms lose or share 1 electon. So the valency of the element is 1.
Transition elements
In forming a compound, the atoms can lose different numbers of electrons. So the valency of the elements is variable.
Writing formulae using valencies
- Write down the valencies of the two elements.
- Write down their symbols, in the same order as the elements in the name.
- Add numbers after the symbols if you need to, to balance the valencies.
Writing formulae by balancing charges.
In an ionic compound, the total charge is 0. So you can work out the formula of an ionic compound by balancing the charges on its ions.
- Write down the name of the ionic compound.
- Write down the symbols for its ions.
- The compound must have no overall charge, so balance the ions until the positive and negative charges add up to zero.
- Write down the formula without the charges.
