4.3 The ionic bond Flashcards
What is the ionic bond?
The ionic bond is the bond that forms between ions of opposite charge.
What is an ionic compound?
An ionic compound is made up of ions held together by strong ionic bonds. They form a regular pattern or lattice of alternating positive and negative ions.
What does a metal react with to form an ionic compound?
A metal reacts with a non-metal to form an ionic compound. The metal atoms lose electrons. The non-metals gain them. The ions form a lattice. The compound has no overall charge.
What should you do to show bonding clearly in bonding diagrams?
Use dots and crosses for electrons from atoms of different elements. Write the symbol for the element in the centre of each atom.
