5.1 Effects of Forces Flashcards
Forces
What is newtons first law?
Newtons 1st law states that an objects velocity stays the same unless acted on by a resultant force.
What is newtons 2nd law?
Newtons second law states that force = mass x acceleration F= ma
What is newtons 3rd law?
Newtons third law states that every action force has an equal and opposite reaction force
What is the formula of a force?
force = mass x acceleration F=ma
What is friction?
It is a force between two surfaces which impedes motion and results in heating.
How do you find the resultant force acting along the same line?
They can be added if in the same direction and subtracted if in opposite direction.
What can a force do:
- Change shape of an object
- Change speed and direction of an object
- Make an object accelerate and decelerate
- Produce change in size and shape
What is elastic deformation?
The object returns to its original shape when the load has been removed. Eg, spring stretched under normal usage
What is plastic deformation?
The object does not return to its original position or shape when load has been removed. Eg, a spring that is stretched too far.
What is hookes law?
Hookes law states that for a spring, F=kx where F is the force applied to the spring and K is the spring constant and x is the extension.
What is the limit of proportionality
It is the point when a spring stops obeying hooks law as a result of being stretched too much.
