what does market research do
- can provide an accurate picture of the potential buyer for your product
- questions help to understand what people are thinking

what human factors are there
- physiological - the way people move and physical attributes
- psychological - the way a person reacts to new experiences
- sociological - effects product will have on user
what is ergonomics
the way humans interact with their environment
what are focus groups
used to collect research, normally for big companies (form of primary research)
fair trade
-a movement that helps producers in developing countries
what is fair trades aim
to achieve fair and better trading conditions and opportunities that promote sustainability
how has social media helped the fair trade movement
it has allowed the movement to directly connect with more people and has encouraged support
why do we need to annotate
to communicate your ideas, sketches may not be able to show your ideas
how should you annotate
- describe, the shape and form of design and if it has and resemblance to any other products
- explain, give examples of materials, construction, scale, size, functionality + features
- discuss, anything else your drawing doesn’t show, give reason for decision
what is surface treatment and why is it done
often given to timber-based products to alter appearance and protect from external elements (weather)
surface preparation
- scratches… should be removed with glass paper
- work your way through different grades (rough - fine)
- disc/ palm/belt sander and linisher can be used to speed up (sanding machines)
- clear surface of dust/ grease/ oil before finish is applied
what should be done before finishing
- surface prep (eg pine that contains knots)
- should be sanded smooth
- have knotting compound applied to knots
- receive primer coat, under coat, then gloss coat
- surface needs to be sanded after each stage
