5. Wrist and Hand Flashcards
On a lateral view of the wrist, what bones are you gonna see that show a normal alignment. What does a lateral view mean?
A lateral view means a view of the side of the wrist on the thumb side bc thumb= lateral.
On this side, the radius which is the bigger bone out of the two forearm bones at the distal end. This is a saucer on which the cup= Lunate sits. Which contains the apple= Capitate sitting under the 2nd metacarpal.
What is the oblique view- angled 45’ AP view used for
This is a better view for minimally displace fracture at 4 or 5th Metacarpal
What is the Ball catcher’s view and what is it for
Looking up at the hands rested in a bowl open shape. Used for investigation of rheumatoid arthritis at PIPJ and MCPJ)
What are the signs of a Scaphoid fracture and why is it important to do repeat x rays of this region in the next week, requiring a full set of scaphoid view
Scaphoid fracture: pain at base of thumb, tenderness in the anatomical snuffbox.
This is important to see because it can lead to avascular necrosis and other negative outcomes
What is the boxer’s fracture
Fracture at the 5th Metacarpal, distally
What are the defining features of Colles Fracture
It is the most common distal radial fracture in any adult group due to FOOSH, which affects osteoporosis.
-Leads to a dorsal angulation of Distal radius at the wrist joint +/- impaction.
-in 50% also Ulnar styloid fracture
What are the signs of a Scapholunate dissociation and why is it important
The 3-4 mm gap between the scaphoid and lunate: terry thomas sign. Important bc significant ligamentous wrist injury from disruption of scapholunate ligament. Instability caused is the leading cause of SLAC wrist
