10. Ankle and Foot Flashcards
What part of the talus articulates in the ankle joint
The trochlea of the talus
What is the weakness of the AP view and what view solves this
Doesn’t show the whole space of the ankle joint as the fibula head blocks a little, so the Mortise view done by small internal rotation of the foot solves this
What is the sinus tarsi
A space between the talus and calcaneus at the sub talar joint
How do you tell which side of the ankle you’re looking at on Lateral view
Lateral malleolus extends further inferior than medial malleolus
What is good view for metatarsals but not good for ankle joint
Inferior/superior view
Which bone do the cuneiforms articulate with : navicular or cuboid
navicular which articulates with talus posteriorly
What bone does the cuboid articulate with
calcaneus
How do you refer to joints between phalanges
Any joint with a phalanx is a phalangeal joint (PJ)
There metatarsal PJs, Proximal and Distal PJs and just Inter PJ for Hallux
What is an avulsion fracture caused by in Tennis and where is it (could be mistaken for growth plate in child)
It is caused by inversion on a planted foot which pulls off the peroneus brevis from its insertion on the 5th Metatarsal styloid causing a fracture in the proximal metatarsal
What are clues for distal tibiofibular joint dislocation
The syndesmosis is damaged so there is a gap between the distal tibiofibular joint. This means that widening of the lateral and medial spaces between the malleolus’ and the tarsal
What side is dorsal on the foot
on the front side facing you not the ground.
