5 - sex hormone physiology Flashcards
1
Q
what is sex hormone axis?
A
hypothalamus stimulated by kisspeptin to release pulses of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) →anterior pituitary releases LH & FSH →gonads release testosterone or oestrogen
2
Q
what is GnRH? what frequency stimulates which hormone?
A
GnRH = gonadotrophin releasing hormone
- high frequency = LH
- low frequency = FSH
3
Q
briefly describe hormone in menstrual cycle?
A
- FSH stimulates growth of follicles
- rising oestrogen exert negative feedback to temporarily lower FSH
- oestrogen reaches certain threshold & causes pulsatility GnRH to make surge of LH
- LH surge causes ovulation & regulates corpus luteum
- progesterone made by corpus luteum
4
Q
what cells change to make corpus luteum?
A
granulosa + theca cells transform to luteal cells
5
Q
what are oestrogen & progesterone functions?
A
oestrogen = increase endometrium thickness, reduce pH, decrease mucous viscosity (for sperm penetration)
progesterone = increase endometrium thickness, relaxes smooth muscle
