5 - Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
What does epithelial tissue cover
Epithelial tissue covers the body and line cavities, hollow organs and tubes.
They are also found in glands of the endocrine system, where hormones are made that regulate different bodily functions, such as growth, reproduction and sleep
How many types of simple epithelial tissue are there and what are they called?
There are 4 types of simple epithelial tissue
1 - simple cuboidal
2 - simple squamous
3 - simple columnar
4 - ciliated
How many types of compound epithelium tissue are there and what are they called?
Simple compound epithelium and keratinised compound epithelium
Simple cuboidal - shape and where there found
Shaped like little cubes
Found in the glands and lining of the kidney tubes as well as in the ducts of glands
Simple columnar
Cells are rectangular in shape
Simple columnar epithelium can be ciliated or non-ciliated
The nuclei are elongated and are usually located near the base of cells
Ciliated is found in the female reproductive tract
Non-ciliated is found in the uterus and digestive tract
Simple squamous
Simple squamous epithelium is a common site for filtration
They are found in the lungs; walls of capillaries and inside of blood and lymphatic vessels
Thy form the lining of cavities such as the mouth, blood vessels, heart and lungs and make up the outer layers of the skin
Ciliated epithelium tissue
They are simple columnar epithelial cells, but they have fine hair like outgrowth, cilia on their free surfaces
These cilia wave in certain directions and are found in the air passages like the nose and in the uterus and Fallopian tubes of females
Compound epithelial tissue
Can be simple or keratinised. It is arranged in a single or multi-layered sheet and usually covers internal and external surfaces of the body
Simple compound epithelium
Consists of several layers of cells, the outer layer of which may be worn away
Simple compound epithelium tissue are found where the body is subject to wear and tear
Keratinised compound epithelium
Like our skin, the outer Ayers of cells are dead, flattened and filled with a protein called keratin, this gives the tissue a waterproof outer layer
