Q

Structural support

A

Connective tissue provides structural support, such as for bones and Cartilage in the skeletal system, and areolar tissue which bonds tissues like skin and muscle

Q

Protect

A

Another function of connective tissue is to protect - the skull protects the brain, and the ribs protect the heart and lungs

Q

Insulate

A

Connective tissue insulates. Adipose tissue contains fatty deposits to help to prevent heat loss

Q

Blood

A

A connective tissue, basically consists of cells suspended in a matrix of fluid called plasma.
It transports gases such as oxygen an carbon dioxide and functions in clotting and immunity

Q

Cartilage

A

Rigid and strong so it can provide support and protection.
forms a structural model for developing bones
Cartilage has no direct blood supply so it must enter by diffusion
It gives strength, toughness, flexibility and slight cushioning when depressed
Found in symphysis pubis, inter-vertebral discs and the knee

Q

Bone

A

Most rigid of connective tissues
It’s hardness comes from minerals such as calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate
The primary cell of bone is the osteocyte
Bones of the skeleton consist of a solid outer layer, which appears like. Honeycomb structure, allowing the bone marrow to produce blood and fat cells

Q

Areolar

A

This is a loose moist tissue
Irregular fibre arrangement and found in the dermis of the skin, superficial fascia, between muscles and around organs
It provides strength, elasticity and support

Q

Adipose

A

Connective tissue consists of cells containing lipid (fat) called adipocytes
The lipid is used to store nervy to be used by the body if needed
Adipose tissue is also found around some organs and joints
It forms a cushion for shock absorption
Adipose tissue also insulates the body
