5 Enterbacteriaceae Flashcards
Features of enterbacteriaceae
Facultative anaerobes. All of them ferment glucose. Oxidase negative. Reduce nitrate to nitrite. Grow on simple media. Motile (except for klebsiella & shigella).
Enterbacteriacea lactose non fermenters
Salmonella, shigella, proteus, yersinia.
IMVC for E.Coli
++ - -
Virulence factors of E.coli
Pili or colonization factors Capsule Endotoxin Enterotoxin Verotoxin
Diseases caused by E.coli
UTI hospital acquired infection Neonatal meningitis Pneumonia and septicemia Diarrhea
(G.r) Antibiotics should not be given to Patient with enterohemorrhagic E. coli
Because they increase the risk of development of hemolytic uremic syndrome
Indicators of fecal pollution of water
E.coli
Cl.perfiingens
E.faecalis
(G.r) Klebsiella produce mucoid rose pink colonies
Due to production of wide capsule
IMVC of klebsiella

Important cause of nosocomial infection
Klebsiella pneumonias
Source of infection of enteric fever
Case or Carrier
The Carrier in enteric fever may by
Intestinal or urinary carriers
Treatment of s.typhoid and s.paratyphoid (enteric fever)
Chloramphenicol
Quinolones
Prophylaxis of s.typhoid and s.paratyphoid (enteric fever)
Killed vaccine (TAB; against typhoid, paratyphoid A, and paratyphoid B)
Responsible for food poisoning
S.typhimurium and s.enteritidis
Treatment of food poisoning
Chloramphenicol
Quinolones
Prophylaxis of food poisoning
Killed vaccine (TAB; against typhoid, paratyphoid A, and paratyphoid B)
Diseases caused by shigella
Shigellosis and bacillary dysentery
Mode of transmission of shigella
Faecal-oral route
The main factors in transmission in shigella
Food, faeces, flies and fingers
Shiga toxin is exotoxin produced by
Sh. Dysenteriae type 1
Proteus vulgaris and proteus mirabilis cause diseases …
UTI , wound infection, and otitis media.
the commonest human pathogen
of the Pseudomonas group.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Diseases caused by P. aeruginosa:
UTI, wound and burn infection, otitis external and corneal ulcer in contact lens users.
