5. Coevolution and Kin Selection Flashcards
Coevolution
Evlolution where two or more species directly impact each other’s evolution
Specific Coevolution
- Pairwise coevolution
- Two species reciprocally impacting each other
Predator-prey coevoluton
- The “evolutionary arms race”
- Two species developing adaptations and counter adaptations in responce to each other
Symmetrical arms race
Selection pressure identical on both species
Two species co-evolving the same trait
- trees towards sunlight
Asymmetrical arms race
Contrasting selection pressures
Both species co-evolve but pressure acts differently on both species
- Cheetah & Thompson’s Gazelle
Symbiosis
A close and prolonged interaction between organisms of different species
Mutualism
Interactions between two different species mutually benefit each other
Obligate mutualism
Two species must cooperate to survive
- fig and fig wasps
Facultative mutualism
Both species benefit but one would survive if the other went extinct
Parasitism
One benefits in the expense of the other
Zika virus
causes microcephaly
Brood parasites
Leaving the upbringing of offspring to another species
Cuckoo Finch
뻐꾸기 핀치 - lays egg in other bird’s nest
Guild coevolution
Interactions between three or more species resulting in coevolution
- Insects and plants with nectar
Kin selection
An organism sacrificing its own reproductive fitness for the sake of it’s close relatives
- Major supporting factor for gene-centric theory of evolution
