dot diagram
the symbol for the element surrounded by dots. Each dot represents one valence electron.
atomic reaction
atoms give up or receive electrons from other atoms, generally to maintain a stable number (up to 8).
chemical bonds
the force of attraction that hold two atoms together. Electrons may be transferred from one atom to another, or they may be shared between the atoms.
ionic bonds
An ionic bond is the attraction between two oppositely charged ions. When an atom loses an electron it loses a negative charge and becomes a positive ion. When an atom gains an electron, it gains a negative charge and becomes a negative ion.
ion
an atom with an electrical charge - either positive or negative.
ions and their charges
can attract different types of elements, forming compounds, such as NaCl.
