5. Cardiovascular Disease - Thrombosis Flashcards

Q
What is thrombosis?

Formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel, obstructing the flow of blood through the circulatory system.

Q
What does thrombosis start with?
A
Atheromas.
3
Q
What can the atheroma do to the artery?
A

4
Q
What happens at the damages site?
A
Platelets and fibrin (protein) accumulate at the site of damage and form a blood clot (thrombus).

Q
How is the blood clot dangerous?
A
It can cause blockage of artery or can become dislodged and block a blood vessel elsewhere in the body.
6
Q
What can also cause another blood clot?
A
Debris from the rupture further down the artery.
