5. and 6. Plumbing Tools and Joining, installing, supporting Flashcards
What is Capillary Attraction and how does it work in Soldering?
Upward movement of liquid through the fibers or cellular structure of a material. Heat pulls solder into joint, Flux allows it to spread evenly.
What temperature does solder melt at?
800-900 degrees F
What separates Brazing from Soldering?
Temperatures above 840 degrees F, typically 1100-1500. Uses MAPP or LP gas. Typically used in refrigeration, medical gas piping, and natural gas piping. Binds metals together better than soldering.
What is 95/5 solder and when should it be used?
95 percent tin, 5 percent antimony. Can be used on potable water supply. Avoid.
What is NPT?
National Pipe Thread - U.S. standard for steel tapered pipe threads at 60 degree angle used in water, gas, steam pipes. Must have 1 inch minimum of threading.
What are the parameters for properly burying pipes?
Must have solid bedding material to support the pipe. Small pockets left open beneath the joints to allow for movement.
What is an Interference Fit for PVC?
Pipe and fitting fit where diameter of internal member is slightly larger than smallest diameter of external member.
