Floor Prints
view of a building showing arrangement of walls and partitions and provides info about windows, doors, cabinets, fixtures, and other features.
Elevation Drawing
orthographic view of a vertical surface without allowance for perspective. Show true shape of vertical surfaces, such as walls, along with material and dimension info. (Interior and Exterior)
Section Drawing
scaled view created by passing an imaginary cutting plane through a portion of a building. Show info about foundation footings and walls, wall and floor framing, height of windows above floors, and eaves of roofs. Shown whenever an important component of
Detail Drawing
small part of a floor plan, elevation, or section drawing at an enlarged scale. Provide info about specialized construction items.
Common Abbreviations
BT ? bathtub, CO cleanout, FD floor drain, KS kitchen sink, LAV lavatory, WC water closet, UR urinal
Plot Plan
civil drawing that shows shape and size of a building lot. Solid lines show exterior contour of the lot; dashed lines show the contour of the lot after excavation and grading. Other info includes a symbol designating true north, the point of beginning fro
Schematic Piping Drawing
piping system without regard to scale and the exact location of the fixtures shown
Isometric Piping Drawing
3D drawing of a plumbing system in which all horizontal pipes are drawn as 30 degree lines and all vertical pipes are drawn as vertical lines
Plumbing System
system of pipes, fittings, and devices within a building that includes water supply distribution pipes; fixtures and fixture traps, soil, waste, and vent pipes, building drain and building sewer, devices, appurtenances (accessories), and connections inside and outside the building
Potable Water
water free from impurities that could cause disease or harmful psychological effects
Potable Water Supply System
includes water service pipe, distribution pipes, connecting pipes, fittings, control valves, and appurtenances inside or outside of the building within property lines
Water Main
Supplies water to building
Corporation Cock or Stop
valve placed on Main to which service is connected
Water Service Pipe
extends from Corporation Cock, Water Main, or other source to the water distribution system
Curb Cock or Stop
underground valve installed on a water service to turn on/off flow of potable water
Stop Box
required to access curb cock, and is an adjustable cast iron box that is flush with the finish grade, capped with a removable iron cover, usually secured with a five-headed bolt. A shutoff rod is inserted into the stop box to turn on/off supply
Water Meter
measures volume of water used in cubic feet or gallons, and is installed on the water service where pipes enter building. Valves are installed on either side to isolate the meter for service
Water Distribution Pipes
carry water throughout the building to fixtures
Main
the principal artery to which branches are connected
Branch
any part of the plumbing system other than a riser, main, or stack. Branches are located in potable water supply, sanitary drainage and vent piping, and storm-water drainage systems
Fixture Branch
water supply pipe that connects a distribution pipe and fixture supply pipe
Riser
water supply pipe that extends vertically one full story or more to feed a fixture or branches to a group of fixtures
Fixture Supply Pipe
is a water supply pipe connecting a fixture to a fixture branch pipe
Sanitary Drainage and Vent Piping System
The system of sanitary drainage pipes and fittings that conveys wastewater and waterborne waste from plumbing fixtures and appliances to a sanitary sewer
Vent Piping System
pipes and fittings that provide circulation of air within the sanitary drainage system to protect trap seals from siphonage or back pressure
Sewage
liquid waste containing animal or vegetable matter in suspension or solution, may include liquids containing chemicals
Waste Pipes
pipe that conveys only liquid waste free of fecal matter (sink, bathtub, urinal)
Soil Pipes
pipe that conveys WC discharge or other similar fixtures containing fecal matter with or without discharge of other fixtures, to a building drain or sewer
Stacks
vertical line of soil, waste, or vent pipe extending one or more stories
Cleanouts
fitting with removable cap or plug installed in sanitary drainage pipe to allow removal of stoppages
Vent Pipes
pipe that vents drainage system of a building and prevents trap siphonage and back pressure
Fixture Trap
fitting or device that, when properly vented, provides a liquid seal to prevent emission of sewer gases without affecting flow of wastewater or waterborne waste through trap
Fixture Drain
drainage pipe that extends from the trap of a fixture to the junction of the next drainage pipe. When multiple fixtures are on the same floor, waste flows into a horizontal branch
Horizontal Branch
soil or waste pipe that receives only the discharge from fixtures on the same floor as the branch and extends horizontally from a stack
Soil Stack
from WC or Urinal, is a vertical drainage pipe that extends one or more stories. May also receive discharge from other fixtures
Waste Stack
from sink or similar fixture, goes into this stack which is a vertical drainage pipe that extends one or more floors and receives wastewater and waterborne waste from fixtures other than human waste
Stack Cleanouts
located at the base of waste and soil stacks, fitting to clean clogs
Building Drain Branch
is part of the lowest piping of a drainage system that receives only discharges from soil, waste, and other drainage pipes inside the walls of a building and conveys it to the building sewer
Front Main Cleanout
located at the building drain, capped or plugged fitting located near the front wall of a building where the building drain exits the building beginning at least 1? outside the foundation footings. Provides access to building drain and building sewer if s
Building Sewer
part of a drainage system that extends from end of building drain to discharge in public sewer, private sewer, individual sewage-disposal system, or other
Sanitary Sewer
only carries sewage, not rainwater, surface water, groundwater or similar non-pollutional wastes
Individual Vent
a pipe that vents an individual fixture trap and may terminate into a branch vent, stack vent, vent stack, or in open air
Branch Vent
a vent pipe connecting two or more individual vents to either a stack vent or vent stack
Stack Vent
is the extension of a soil or waste stack above the highest horizontal drain connected to the stack
Vent Stack
vertical pipe that provides circulation of air to and from a drainage system. Exits through a vent pipe enclosed within a roof jacket, a jacket or flange which seals to prevent rainwater entering around the vent pipe
Storm-water Drainage System
Piping system used to convey rainwater or other precipitation to a storm sewer or other disposal
Roof Drain
drain that receives the rainwater collecting on a roof surface and discharges into a rainwater leader
Rainwater Leader
a pipe that conveys rainwater from a roof to a storm drain or other point of disposal. A cleanout is typically installed at the base of a rainwater leader
Building Storm Drain
is a building drain that conveys rainwater but does not carry sewer
Building Storm Sewer
is a building sewer that conveys rainwater not waste
Storm Sewer
sewer for conveying groundwater, rainwater, surface water, or similar non-pollutional wastes
Combination Sewer
sewer that carries both water waste and water borne waste and storm water. Chicago uses these.
