5. Adding and Subtracting Fractions Flashcards
Define “Factor”
- A number that divides another number evenly, leaving no remainder
What is unique about a factor and a divisor?
- They are always the same
Define “Least Common Denominator (LCD)”
- The smallest number for which 2 given denominators are factors
Define “Like Denominators”
- Having the same denominator in 2 or more fractions
Define “Multiples of a Number”
- The numbers you get when you multiply a given number by 1, then 2, then 3, etc.
What is the 1st step in adding fractions?
- Check to see if the denominators are the same. If they are different, find the LCD
What must you do if the denominators are different when adding fractions?
- Find the least common denominator between the two fractions
What must happen to the numerator when finding an LCD?
- Multiply the numerator by the same number that the denominator was multiplied by to get the LCD
What is the 2nd step to adding or subtracting fractions?
- Add or subtract the numerators together
What must you do to the whole number with adding or subtracting mixed fractions?
- Add or subtract the whole numbers together, separate from the fractions
What is the most common mistake when adding or subtracting fractions?
- Adding or subtracting the denominators as well as the numerators
What is the 2nd most common mistake when adding or subtracting fractions?
- Adding or subtracting fractions with different denominators
What is the 3rd most common mistake when adding or subtracting fractions?
- Not multiplying the numerator by the same number as the denominator when finding the LCD
What is the fastest way to find a common denominator?
- Multiply the two denominators together, but it will often not be the least common denominator
