17. Graphing in the Coordinate Plane Flashcards
1
Q
Define “Cartesian Plane”
A
- An xy plane
2
Q
Define “Coordinate”
A
- The number value assigned to a point on the x or y axis. Each point on the coordinate plane is identified by 2 coordinates.
3
Q
Define “Coordinate Plane”
A
- The 2 dimensional plane, or the x-y plane.
- A 2 dimensional object formed by two number lines, one horizontal and one vertical (so that they intersect at right angles)
4
Q
Define “Midpoint”
A
- The middle point of a line segment
5
Q
Define “Ordered Pair”
A
- The two coordinates used to identify a point on a coordinate plane
- Ordered pairs are often written in the form (x,y), with the x axis coordinate first and the y-axis coordinate second
6
Q
Define “Origin”
A
- The intersection point of the x-axis and y-axis
7
Q
Define “Quadrant”
A
- One of the 4 sections of the coordinate plane
- Quadrants are labeled counterclockwise from the top as 1, 2, 3, and 4
8
Q
Define “Slope”
A
- The “Rise over run” or change in y over the change in x
- The quantity of the vertical change in y-values divided by the horizontal change in x-values
9
Q
Define “X-axis”
A
- The horizontal number line on the coordinate plane
10
Q
Define “Y-axis”
A
- The vertical number line on the coordinate plane
11
Q
What is the Midpoint Formula of a Line Segment?
A
12
Q
What is the Slope Formula?
A
13
Q
What is the most common mistake when solving slope problems?
A
- Switching the order in which you enter the information in the numerator and in the denominator
