5/18/17 Flashcards
Surface Tensions of Liquids
Molecules on surface have a strong pull towards the center of the liquid. This pull creates a strong ‘skin’ on the surface.
Hydrogen Bond
Special type of dipole
Form between H (bonded to O or N) and a O or N on another molecule.
The O and N makes the H polar.
Dipole-Dipole Interactions
Attraction between positive pole of 1 molecule with the negative of another.
For polar compounds
Harder to melt and boil, compared to London.
London dispersion Forces
Weakest of the 3
Usually form between nonpolar molecules
Electrons between 2 molecules are pushed apart allowing a brief polarity
More electrons = more strength
Col ligature properties
Properties of a solution that depend only on the number of solute particles dissolved in the solvent
Solvent
Substance doing the dissolving
Solute
Particle being dissolved
Solution
Solute dissolved in solvent
