Palm Oil
Native to W Africa and C America, imported to SE Asia in early 1900s. Large plantations are in Malaysia and Indonesia. Area of Land in Indonesia for plantations has doubled in 10 years.’Friends of the Earth’ (NGO) says demand for palm oil is the major cause for deforestation in Malaysia and Indonesia. Oil is used for cooking, processed foods, cosmetics ETC. Supply employment, herbicides and pesticides used. native animals killed as pests. Loss of habitat.
Sustainability of Soils - Danum Valley
Sabah, East Malaysia, lowland tropical forest. Forestry operations occur all year due to high rainfall. Forest is selectively felled (some trees). Impermeable geology and loss of transpiration results in higher run-off. Logging roads create easy water flow due to their steep angle up the mountains. Eroded soils end up in local streams and rivers.
