(4th Quarter) Energy And Waves Flashcards
Carries or transfers energy but they do not transfer particles of the medium. Is a physical disturbance through a medium in which energy is transferred
Wave
Is a substance of material that carries a wave. It can be solid, liquid, or gas
Medium
Are waves that require a medium
Examples: ocean waves, sound waves, waves in a rope, slinky waves
Mechanical Waves
Waves that can transfer energy without traveling through a medium
Examples: radio waves, microwaves, X-rays, UV rays, visible light, Gamma rays, infrared
Electromagnetic Waves
Are waves in which particles in a medium moves in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the wave motion
Transverse Waves
Are waves in which particles in a medium moves parallel to the direction of the wave motion
Longitudinal Waves
The highest point in a wave
Crest
The lowest point in a wave
Trough
The distance from the resting point to the highest point/lowest point
Amptitude
The length/distance of one complete wave cycle
Wavelength
- Is a form of energy that can be heard and travel in waves
- it is the range of compression wave frequencies to which the human ear may or may not be sensitive
- it is a Mechanical Wave and travels as Longitudinal Wave
Sound
Makes a circular wave/motion
Surface Wave
How is sound produced?
When matter vibrates or moves back and forth very quickly
How fast does sound travel in Solids, Liquids, Gasses, and Vacuum/space?
Solid: fast speed
Liquid: medium speed
Gas: slow speed
Vacuum/space: no sound
Name the four factors that affect the speed of sound
- Temperature
- Humidity
- Air Pressure
- Elastic Property
