(3rd Quarter) The Compound Microscope Flashcards
Name the three Illuminating Parts
- Mirrors
- Condenser
- Iris Diaphragm
Name the four Magnifying Parts
- Eyepiece/Ocular Lens
- Objectives
- Oil Immersion
- Scanner
Name the eleven Mechanical Parts
- Base
- Pillar
- Arm
- Inclination Joint
- Stage
- Substage
- Body Tube
- Draw Tube
- Revolving Nosepiece
- Dust Shield
- Adjust Knobs
An adjustable part used for collecting and reflecting light
Mirror
Concentrates the reflected light from the mirror to the object being examined
Condenser
It is used to regulate the intensity of light that enters the condenser
Iris Diaphragm
A detachable short cylinder located on top of the draw tube, points specific parts of the specimen
Eyepiece/Ocular
Two of these lenses are usually attached to the nosepiece. Its magnifying power is shown at the sides
Objectives
A short tube with open large lens and lower magnifying power
Low Power Objective
A long tube with a smaller opening and higher magnifying power
High Power Objective
The stable structure where the microscope firmly rests
Base
Refers to the upward extension of the base where the arm is attached
Pillar
The curved handle of the microscope that connects the base and body tube
Arm
A movable hinge that is used for tilting or inclining the microscope when necessary
Inclination joint
A platform that allows light from below to pass through the specimen
Stage
Located below the stage, it holds the condenser above and the iris diaphgram below
Substage
A hollow cylinder that attaches the draw tube to the microscope and serves as a passageway for light
Body Tube
A small cylinder that holds the ocular
Draw Tube
Located at the base of the body tube. It holds and facilates the shifting of objective lenses
Revolving Nosepiece
Located above the objective lenses, it keeps the dust from the objective lenses off
Dust Shield
Consists of two knobs, used for raising or lowering the body tube
Adjustment knobs
A large knob used for faster movement when focusing the LPO
Coarse adjustment knob
A small knob for slow or little movement when focusing HPO
Fine adjustment knob
What color is the HPO? (High Power Objectives)
Blue
What color is the LPO? (Low Power Lenses)
Red
What color is the scanner?
Yellow
