4C Aeronautical Charts# Flashcards
Aeronautical Charts
Maps that provide area topography and include aeronautical and navigational information.
Great Circle
The largest circle that can be drawn on the surface of the earth. (Meridian)
Small Circle
A circle drawn on the surface of the earth that is not a meridian.
Parallels
Horizontal lines on the earth, (lines of latitude).
Latitude
Parallels, used to locate a position north or south of the equator.
Meridians
Lines of Longitude
Longitude
Lines that extend from the north to the south pole.
Prime Meridian
0° of Latitude, passes through Greenwich, England
Projections
Used for transferring a section of the earth’s surface onto a flat chart.
Mercator Projections
Distortion of landmasses increases with distance from the equator. Used as wall charts.
Lambert Conformal Conic Projection
Used to create aeronautical charts because it minimizes distortion.
Sectional Charts
Area charts commonly used for VFR.
Maximum Elevation Figures (MEFs)
Based on the highest known feature within the quadrangle
World Aeronautical Chart (WAC)
Similar to sectional, but bigger.
Legend
Tool for deciphering symbols and decoding aeronautical chart information
