4B.1b Flashcards
What is a rural-urban continuum?
A rural-urban continuum exists, ranging from the high densities of inner urban areas to the low densities of the remotest urban areas.
What is population structure?
The population structure refers to the number of males and females in different age groups at a given time and place, and may be shown graphically in a population pyramid.
What is one factor that show evidence of the rural-urban continuum?
Population density - highest densities are in the urban areas, but even in rural zones, there will be variations based on the employment opportunities and accessibility.
In developed countries, why is it that people of all ages and backgrounds have the opportunity to live and work in any rural or urban place?
This possibility has arisen due to modern communication networks, such as broadband, and the flexible location of many tertiary jobs.
What other factors could influence population density profiles?
Physical environment Socio-economic status Dwelling type and household size Functions (non-residential activities in the area) Planning (green belts and housing)
What is the demographic transition model?
A model representing changing rates of fertility and mortality over time, their changing balances and their net effect on rates of population growth
