4B Flashcards
1
Q
how does classification work
A
- each group is called taxon (plural taxa)
- domains are the highest taxonomic rank which divides into: archaea, eubacteria and eukarya
- different species can be classified into same genus
2
Q
what are the five kingdoms
A
- prokaryotae, which contain prokaryotic cells
- Protoctista are eukaryotic cells
- fungi, they are all eukaryotric cells, have non-cellulose cell walls, they are saprotrophs and reproduce using pores
- plantea, multicellular eukaryotic cells, they have cell walls made up of cellulose, posses large vacuole, have chloroplast and are autotrophs
- animalia are multicellular eukaryotic organisms, no cell wall and are heterotrophs
3
Q
how is the variety of life is threatened by human activities and factors
A
- the population of human is increasing, therefore there is conflict between human needs and conservation biodiversity
- habitat destruction, overexploitation ((they
are being used up faster than they can be replaced), hunting, agriculture (harvesting monoculture which would reduce biodiversity) and climate change
4
Q
what does biodiversity mean
A
- the number of different species and genetic diversity within specie
5
Q
what does endemic mean
A
- that this species are native to a particular
6
Q
how biodiversity can be measured within a habitat using species richness, and within a species using genetic diversity
A
- random sampling is used estimate the distribution and abundance of species
