4A Flashcards
what does the mucous membrane consist of?
2 layers: epithelium type depends on site, loose connective tissue (lamina propria)
Functions of Body membranes
cover body surfaces, line body cavities, forms protective sheets around organs
covering/lining (epithelial) membranes contain
epithelial tissue layer, connective tissue layer
what does the serous membrane line?
compartments in the ventral body cavity that are closed to the exterior of the body.
what is dermis composed of?
dense (fibrous) connective tissue.
what does the mucous membranes line?
lines all body cavities that open to the exterior body surface
mucous membranes characteristics
moist, some mucosae secrete protective, lubricating mucus
what is the mucous membranes adapted for?
absorption or secretion
two major categories of body membranes
epithelial, connective
What does the synovial membrane line?
fibrous capsules surrounding joints such as bursae and tendon sheaths.
what does synovial membranes secrete?
a lubricating fluid to cushion organs moving against each other during muscle activity.
where is the pleurae membrane?
it surrounds the lungs
connective tissue membranes
synovial membranes
cutaneous membrane = skin
dry membrane, outermost protective boundary
2 layers of the cutaneous membrane
epidermis and dermis
where it the pericardia membrane?
it surrounds the heart.
what is epidermis composed of?
keratinized stratified squamous epithelium.
specific serous membranes
peritoneum, pleurae, pericardia
where is the peritoneum membrane?
covers the organs in the abdominal cavity.
Epithelial membranes are
simple organs, also called covering and lining membranes
what does the serous membrane consist of?
2 layers: simple squamous epithelium, areolar connective tissue.
how does the serous membrane occur?
occur in pairs, separated by serous fluid, with a visceral and parietal layer
epithelial membrane
cutaneous, mucous, serous
what tissue does the synovial membrane consist of?
loose areolar connective tissue ONLY (no epithelial tissue)
