4.9 Health & Safety Flashcards
RSI
Repetitive Strain Injury - a range of conditions affecting the neck, shoulders, arms, wrists and hands. The employee uses the same muscle groups to perform the same actions over and over again, eg working at a keyboard all day (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome).
• Take regular breaks
• Use ergonomically designed keyboard and mouse
• Use appropriate furniture like an adjustable swivel chair
• Use a wrist rest underneath the keyboard
• Use a foot rest
• Change the sitting position from time to time
Eyestrain
A very common problem caused by overexposure to computer screens. It can also lead to headaches, blurred vision and deterioration in eyesight.
• Use anti-glare screens
• Use swivel bases on screens to deflect light
• Use screens that have adjustable brightness and contrast
• Have good lighting in the office
• Use blinds to control sunlight
• Employer to provide regular free eye tests
Back pain
Usually minor problems that can be debilitating periodically, can be related to the sitting position at a computer.
• Use an adjustable chair to allow height adjustment and backrest tilting
• Take regular breaks and walk around to exercise muscles
Radiation
Computers can emit Extremely Low Frequency radiation, which strength is similar to mild sunlight exposure. Illness may occur if the user is working for long periods in front of a computer screen. There are concerns about pregnant women and the unborn child being exposed to computer radiation. • Take regular breaks • Use swivel chairs to deflect glare • Anti-glare filters • Use low-emission screens
What is meant by a safe workplace?
Employees will not meet with accidents because of the way in which the equipment is organised.
State 3 measures employers can take to ensure safety of employees.
- Cables should be safely organised to prevent accidents like tripping over cables and electrocution
- Extension leads should not be used in the office as overloading electrical sockets could result in fire
- Fire extinguishers should be installed which can put out electrical fires
