47 - New Materials Flashcards
What are smart materials?
Materials which behave differently depending on conditions
What is nitinol?
Shape memory alloy - goes back to remembered shape when heated
What is a nanoparticle?
A particle 1-100nm
How many atoms does a nanoparticle have?
A few hundred atoms
What are fullerenes?
Hollow balls or closed tubes of carbon atoms arranged in hexagons
What is a nanotube?
Lots of fullerenes joined together
Hollow carbon tubes
Very strong
Conduct electricity
Why would nanoparticle be effective as catalysts?
Large surface area to volume ratio
Why would nanoparticles be effective in sun cream or deordorant?
Wouldn’t leave white marks
Why is nanomedicine significant?
Fullerenes are absorbed easily -> could deliver drugs directly to cells
Silver nanoparticles kill bacteria
