4.6.2.3 Selective Breeding Flashcards
1
Q
What is selective breeding?
A
- artificial selection
- process by which humans breed plants and animals for particular genetic characteristics
2
Q
What is the process of selective breeding?
A
- choosing parents with desired characteristics from a mixed population
- breeding them together
- offspring is bred together
- continues over many generations
3
Q
What are some examples of desired characteristics?
A
- disease resistance in food crops
- animals which produce more meat or milk
- domestic dogs with a gentle nature
- large or unusual flowers
4
Q
What is the main issue with selective breeding?
A
- inbreeding
5
Q
Why is inbreeding an issue?
A
- reduction of gene pool as the number of different alleles reduce
6
Q
What happens if the environment changes or if there is a new diseases if inbreeding has occurred?
A
- species could become extinct as they all have the same genetic make-up so chance of organisms adapting is reduced
7
Q
What is another issue with selective breeding?
A
- small gene pool leads to greater chance of genetic defects being present as recessive characteristics are more likely to be present
