4.5 The Interaction Of Human And Physical Processes Flashcards
Why is the sea level rising?
The sea level is rising because of the melting of on land ice. Eg. Antarctica. This is happening because of climate change.
How bad will sea level get and how will it affect different places around the world?
Sea levels can reach up to 60 metres higher if all on land ice melts, which would affect many places, including the whole of the UK.
How will climate change affect erosion?
Climate change will cause water volume to rise therefore there is more water able to make contact with rock, speeding up the process.
How will climate change affect storm frequency, intensity, and storm surges?
Climate change affects the frequency, intensity and storm surges as it increases the tide, has more power in the wave and is more destructive.
How sill storm surges affect the people and the environment?
Habitats will be destroyed and homes will be flooded along with streets due to the breeching of coastal defences.
Explain How groynes and sea walls work.
Groynes stop LSD and cause sediment to build up through deposition, key for beaches to form. Sea walls stop waves from going onto land and are reflected away from the land back to the sea.
Explain how beach replenishment and slope stabilisation works
Beach replenishment is when sand from the coast is spread out and kore is deposited manually to build up the beach. Slope stabilisation is when pipes are filtered through a slope so that water doesn’t penetrate the slope and create a land slide.
What is hard engineering?
Hard engineering is when lots of construction is used to do a certain coastal defence. It works without nature.
Shat is soft engineering?
Soft engineering is when little to no construction is used. It works with nature.
