4.4 Flashcards
What are greenhouse gases?
gases in the atmosphere that absorb long-wave radiation
Greenhouse Gas and it’s source: Carbon Dioxide
cell respiration
combustion of fossil fuels
combustion of biomass
Greenhouse gas and its source: Water Vapour
evaporation of the oceans
transpiration from plants
Greenhouse gas and its source: Nitrous Oxide
vehicle exhaust
some agricultural processes
soil bacteria
What percentage of the atmosphere do all of the greenhouse gases together make up?
1%
What does the impact of a gas depend on?
It’s ability to absorb long-wave radiation as well as its concentration in the atmosphere
Explain how an increase in the concentrations of greenhouses gases enhances the greenhouse effect
As the concentration of a greenhouse gas in the atmosphere increases more & more
long-wave radiation from the earth’s surface is absorbed & reemitted back towards the earth
What are some of the possible consequences of an enhanced greenhouse effect?
changing rain and snow patterns extreme weather conditions melting permafrost rising sea levels droughts wildfires
What is the general relationship between global CO2 levels and temperature?
There’s a correlation b/w CO2 concentration and temperature
they both follow the same pattern of fluctuations
When CO2 is high the global temp is warmer (& vice versa)
