What was Strength through joy (KDF)?
A DAF scheme
>Aim: Increase productivity by making workers happy.
>Provides low-cost/free activities,
e.g. concert/holiday, for hard workers.
What was Beauty of Labour (SDA)?
A KDF scheme
>Aim: Improve worker conditions e.g. reducing noise, canteens+ building swimming pool.
>Construction of project= by workers in their free time.
What was the Volkswagen? Why was it known as the peoples car?

>Hitler asked Porsche to design fam car= VW Beetle
>Workers paid 5marks/week
towards car=> no-one paid enough=money went to rearmament
Had the standard of living improved by 1939? Where people worse or better off?
Better off:
+More jobs with most men at work.
+Average wage +20% compared to 1933.
+KDF provides leisure activities+ holidays
+SDA improves working conditions
+Car ownership +3 fold
Worse off:
-Invisible unemployment+ lots unemployed
-Cost of food rose=cancelled wage grow (not real terms pay rise).
-Trade unions banned=> workers= fewer rights+ longer hours:43h/week=> 49h 1939
-Car ownership= high earners low earns only bough essentials.
Why did Hitler want to get people working? What was the problem with the unemployed?
- they were dangerously political, motivated by poverty + hunger=> turn to other parties for help?

What was the National Labour service (RAD)
Started in Wiemar GOV
>July 1935- Was compulsory for men 18-25 to serve 6 months on scheme.
>Worked on job creation schemes+ public works e.g draining marshes
>Mostly hated: Low pay, long hours+ boring work.
What were the job creation schemes? What were the construction projects?
-Reduce unemployment= money put into large projects=> befit economy + reduce unemployment.
Construction projects:
-7,000km of Autobahns(1st starts in 1933)=> connect country.
-Public buildings
-Sport facilities e.g. Berlin Olympics 1936.
How did rearmament create jobs?
> Build up stockpile of arms=provide arms=> TOV limited this

What was invisible unemployment? How did it affect unemployment stats?
Lots= not included in unemployment stats:
>Jews-forced out of jobs
>Women-dismissed/leave jobs
>-25 unmarried men-RAD
>Opponents- conc camps
Official figures showed a drop form:
4.8m=1933
0.3m=1939
=>Great but didn’t included invisible unemployment=> they helped ‘reduce’ unemployment
