4.3 Apply safe and effective use of self in the therapeutic relationship Flashcards
Apply safe and effective use of self in the therapeutic relationship
(Safe and effective use of self in the psychotherapeutic relationship is one of the defining competencies of psychotherapy practice: the therapist’s learned capacity to understand his or her own subjective context and patterns of interaction as they inform his or her participation in the
therapeutic relationship with the client. It also speaks to the therapist’s self-reflective use of his or her personality, insights, perceptions, and judgments to optimize interactions with clients in the therapeutic process.)
Recognize the impact of power dynamics within the therapeutic relationship
Avoid taking a power position with clients, it is important to keep the concept “clients are experts on their own experience thoughts and feelings”. Knowing yourself and our triggers around power as a therapist helps to see a situation of power imbalance is brewing. Checking privilege at the door can also help.
Protect client from imposition of the therapist’s personal issues.
To protect clients from therapists’ personal issues and avoid issues of countertransference or imposing personal preferences on the client, it is important for therapists to be aware of their own personal triggers, refrain from judgement and keep the focus on the client’s issues and goals.
Use self-disclosure appropriately
To be used in limited capacity when it may support client recovery
