Describe therapist’s education, qualifications and role.
DTATI is a post graduate, masters level diploma in Art therapy from The Toronto Art Therapy Institute (TATI) In addition to the require coursework students complete 800 of practicum experience and publish a graduate thesis. The roles of an Art Therapist include:
▪ Utilize knowledge of counseling or psychology and the arts.
▪ Facilitating individual and/or group sessions.
▪ Actively listening and observing.
▪ Provide customization of treatment to meet client needs.
▪ Encouraging client expression.
▪ Recording and maintaining client records.
▪ Continue learning.
▪ Maintain professional and therapeutic boundaries
From CRPO- Treating, by means of psychotherapy technique, delivered through a therapeutic relationship, an individual’s serious disorder of thought, cognition, mood, emotional regulation, perception or memory that may seriously impair the individual’s judgment, insight, behaviour, communication or social functioning.
Differentiate the role of the therapist in relation to other health professionals.
As an Art Therapist I work with clients to promote self-expression, reframe perspectives, explore solutions, increase self-awareness, and develop coping skills.
My roles do not include diagnosis, prescribing or practicing beyond my knowledge or out of my scope.
Explain the responsibilities of the client and the therapist in a therapeutic relationship.
Art therapist responsibilities include; creating a safe space, maintain confidentiality, provide informed consent, establish goals of treatment, maintain boundaries, recognize issues of transference, practice thoughtful termination, and conduct business professionally, with full transparency. Client responsibilities include; providing honest and accurate information, participation in the process, practice mutual respect.
Explain the advantages and disadvantages of
participating in psychotherapy.
Advantages- Art Therapy helps clients; defines personal goals, build coping strategies, develop solution focused problem solving, provides opportunity for self-reflection and self-insight, and promotes expression.
Disadvantages- Art Therapy. As with any psychotherapeutic process, long buried feelings may emerge.
This can sometimes make the client feel worse before they feel better.
Explain client rights to privacy and confidentiality, and the limitations imposed upon them by law.
Client rights as they are stated in my informed consent.
• At any time a client may request to look at his or her own files (personal contact information, progress notes, referral notes, billing documentation and artwork). Upon receipt of a written request, files will be made available to the client within a two-week time period.
• In keeping with your privacy needs, please let me know if, or how, you would like to be greeted if we encounter each other in a public setting.
• I welcome any question or discussion related to your privacy rights.
• All conditions relating to confidentiality mentioned above are in keeping with the Privacy Act of Canada. (A copy may be found on their website www.priv.gc.ca)
I will not share personal information about you or your child, or his/her life story or what happens in any of our therapy sessions to anyone outside the following three exceptions:
1) If the client requests the release their personal information to an outside party. In this event a Form 14 from the Mental Health Act is required.
2) By Federal Law a therapist is required to: *Report to authorities when they suspect a child is being abused *To comply with a court ordered subpoena
3) Common Law dictates that it is the responsibility of the therapist to report to authorities when they are privy to plans that a client has to physically harm himself or herself or another.
Explain relevant rules and policies.
Explain and obtain informed consent in accordance with legal requirements.
The rules on obtaining informed consent come from the Health Care Consent Act (HCCA) It is the role of the Art therapist to 1) explain the aspects of treatment, providing specifics with no misrepresentation or fraudulent claims. 2) identify associated risks in participating in art therapy. 3) Obtain consent as it relates to client’s assessment or therapy.
