4.2c Flashcards
What are the characteristics of glass? (8)
Transparency (allows light to pass through)
Color (can be modified)
Strength (high compressive strength / low tensile strength)
Brittleness (low impact strength, shatters easily)
Hardness
Nonporous (does not absorb liquids/ chemicals)
Unreactive
Non-toxic
What are the different applications of glass? (5)
Soda glass
Borosilicate (Pyrex)
Laminated glass
Toughened/ tempered glass
Glass fiber
What is soda glass and its applications?
Commonly used glass with low thermal shock (shatters easily in a temperature change). Often used in window planes, glassware, drink bottles
What is borosilicate (pyrex) and its applications?
Similar to soda glass with the addition of oxides to improve thermal conductivity. Often used in cookware, beakers (any application where heat/cold is crucial)
What is laminated glass and its applications?
Layers of glass divided by a sheet of plastic in between to prevent the growth of cracks. Often used for bullet proof glass, windscreens of cars (any application where impact is a probability which threatens user safety)
What is toughened/ tempered glass and its applications?
Glass is heated to a high temperature then blasted with cold air to put the outside in compression and inside in tension, in order for the glass to shatter into little pieces instead of large shards/ Often used in side windows of cards, shower glass
What is glass fiber and its applications?
Long strands of glass woven into fabric form with polymer resin added to strengthen. Often used in tent poles, fishing poles
What is the recovery and disposal of glass?
Recycled glass (cullet) is added to make new glass in order to save energy and materials
Continually recyclable (glass does not degrade like plastic)
