What is surface modeling?
A realistic picture of the final model, offering some machining data but no data about the interior of the part
What is solid modeling?
Accurate digital models of the final part. They provide a complete set of data for the product to be created
What is “top-down” assembly?
A product development process where the design originates as a concept and gradually evolves into a complete product
What is “bottom-up” assembly?
A product development process where parts are created independently and are brought together for assembly
What is data modeling?
A database/ data set used to understand the performance of a design based on the requirements for the use context/ application
What are the three structures of data models?
Flat, hierarchical, or relational
What is virtual prototyping?
Use of CAD to develop realistic/ interactive models (digital mock-ups)
What are digital humans?
Digital simulations of the biometrics of the human body (to predict how humans will move/ interact with a virtual prototype)
What is motion capture?
The recording of actual human movement which is mapped to a digital model to analyze how users interact with a product
What are haptic technologies?
Technology that allows the user to become part of a simulation and interact with it. It is used to analyze performance and improve design, or in situations where it is difficult to train in the real environment
What is virtual reality?
The ability to simulate a real situation on the screen and interact with it in a near-natural way
What is animation?
The ability to link graphic screens together in such a way as to simulate motion or a process
What is a finite element analysis (FEA)?
The calculation and simulation of unknown factors in products using CAD systems to evaluate the strength/ durability of a design before production
What are advantages of CAD modeling?
Identifies errors before production (reduced costs + waste)
High accuracy/ fidelity
What are disadvantages of CAD modeling?
Software costs
Specialized training (time consuming + expensive)
