4.2.7- In Situ Conservation Flashcards
Explain what a marine conservation zone is.
Areas of the sea set aside for in situ conservation to conserve the diversity of a species and habitat.
Define what a wildlife reserve is.
Areas that are set aside for the in situ conservation of a species or habitat.
Explain what the statement ‘conservation is not a passive process’ means.
Conservation involves active management in order to maintain habitats and their species.
What are the two aims of in and ex situ conservation?
Maintain biodiversity and allow an and angered species to survive.
Give three examples of things it is possible to pass legislation for.
To stop activities like hunting, logging and clearing land for agricultural development.
Give two downsides and limitations to legislation against activities like hunting, logging and agricultural development.
It can be difficult to persuade some countries that legislation is necessary and it can also be difficult to enforce this legislation.
What is the main example of in situ conservation and what is another, lesser used example?
Wildlife reserves.
Land management agreements on private land and farm sites that are used for conservation.
List and explain the three principles for choosing a wildlife reserve.
Comprehensiveness- how many species are represented in the habitat and what are the environmental conditions
Adequacy- is it large enough for survival of all organisms in the habitat
Representativeness- is there a full range of diversity within species and each set of environmental conditions?
What are the four reasons why conflict can arise between a wildlife reserve and the local population if a wildlife reserve is set up without consideration of the local people?
Tourists feeding protected animals it littering
Illegal timber and plant harvesting
Continued poaching for food
Protected animals destroying crops
Lost four advantages of in situ conservation sites.
facilitate scientific research. Allow the ecological integrity of the area to be maintained and restored. Maintains the biodiversity of the area and is a reflective example of an ecosystem. Plants and animals concerned in natural environment.
List four disadvantages of in situ conservation.
The thing that caused the species to go endangered may still be present/ population may have already lost most of its genetic diversity/ area may act as a honeypot for poachers and ecotourists- inadvertently cause disturbance/ endangered habitats may be fragmented and too small for populations ensured survival.
Explain what in situ conservation means.
Carrying out active management to maintain the biodiversity in the natural environment of a species. Minimising human impact on the natural environment and protecting it in a number of ways.
