Q

Compare the weathering that is found in the uplands and lowlands.

A

Upland- freeze thaw weathering making the ground rough. Water expands and freezes in cracks and breaks the rocks into pieces.
Lowland- biological weathering where plants and animal burrows are in the rock putting pressure and creating large cracks creating the break down of rocks.
Chemical weathering when rainwater absorbs Co2 and dissolves the rocks.

Q

Compare the soil/rock movement processes in the uplands and lowlands.

A

Freeze thaw creates scree in the uplands that are unstable and collapse creating rockfalls. Landslides are common as the ground gets saturated and wet so it brings down the rocks.
In the lowlands soil absorbs lots of moisture and becomes saturated and move down the slope called soil creep.

Q

Compare misfit rivers and dry valleys

A

Misfit rivers are rivers left by a glacier that are too small to have eroded the valley but are there due to the glaciers being gone. These can create v-shaped valleys.
Dry valleys are valleys with an area of chalk with cracks that are frozen during the glacier being impermeable and then unfroze letting water pass through it as it is permeable again. The river is no longer there so is a dry valley.

Q

Explain how glaciers have affected both landscapes

A

Upland- created u-shaped valleys due to erosion when it melted and also created cories. Misfits have been left in these valleys after the glacier.

Lowland- the anticline was eroded exposing less resistant rock and created river and valleys. The glacier also created, escarpments, scarp slopes and dry valleys.

Q

Explain 2 ways humans have affected the upland landscape

A

Afforestation in valleys and then cutting them down but replanting them to get more money.

Sheep farming stopping trees from growing and creating a forest but also effects how there are more floods. This brings in a lot of money.

Q

Explain 2 ways humans have affected the lowland landscape

A

Mainly used for farmland and gives farmers money from crops grown from rich soil. Also very flat so good to farm crops on.

Irrigation channels made of water for barriers to show the different lands and farms of different farmers

Q

Compare which landscape has been affected more by humans

A

The upland has been less effected than the lowland as the upland has been used for sheep farming, afforestation and made brick walls to divide up land. There are small villages near farms so people can look after their animals.

Lowlands have been effected more as it is used for crop farming and having villages living in the lowland areas. Wind farms are in the lowlands as it is very flat and good for the business. Trees have been cut down for large farmlands. There are lots of different farmlands including crop and animal farms.
