4.2 Cell Junctions Flashcards
Five types of cell junctions
Tight junction, adherens junction, desmosomes, hemidesmosomes, and Gap junction.
Communication between adjacent cells
Gap junctions function
Seal off passageways between adjacent cells
Tight junction
Help epithelial surfaces resist separation during various contractile activities as when food moves through the intestines
Adherens junction
Contains plaque and have transmembrane glycoproteins that extend into the intercellular space between adjacent cell membrane and attach cells to one another
Desmosomes
Resemble desmosomes they do not link adjacent cells. Looks like half a desmosomes.
Hemidesmosomes
Tight junction, adherens junction, desmosomes, hemidesmosomes, and Gap junction.
