4.2 Acid-base titrations Flashcards
what is a titration used for?
finding the concentration of a solution
identifying unknown chemicals
finding the purity of a substance
how is a standard solution formed?
solid is weighed using a weighing boat
solid is dissolved in a beaker using distilled water
solution is transferred into a volumetric flask and distilled water is used to fill the volumetric flask to a graduation line
stopper is added and the volumetric flask is inverted multiple times
what would happen if too much water is added when making a standard solution?
larger titre as the solution is now more dilute
outline titration
add solution to a conical flask using a pipette
add the other solution to a burette
add indicator to the conical flask
record initial volume, add the solution from the burette and record the final volume
titre = final - initial
how can titrations be concordant?
results within 0.1 cm3
effect of having an air bubble in burette on tire?
larger titre as reading is greater
effect of burette readings being taken from the top of the meniscus?
no effect as the difference is the same
where on the meniscus is the volume read?
the bottom
