4.2 Flashcards
Define Nitrogen fixation.
Convert N2 to useable compounds.
Define Nitrification
It is put oxygen of ammonia.
Define Denitrification
Putting nitrogen or nitrogen compounds in the atmosphere.
Define Photosynthesis
H2O, CO2, and heat –> O2 and glucose
Define Cellular Respiration
O2 and glucose –> H2O, CO2, and heat
What type of organisms perform the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration?
Photosynthesis is performed by plants. Cellular Respiration is performed by plants and animals.
How humans affect the carbon and nitrogen cycles.
By adding fertilizer to the soil.
Differentiate between how energy and how carbon flow through a food chain.
The energy follows the 10% rule through the food chain. Carbon gets bonded to the energy during photosynthesis so the carbon also moves with the energy therefore following the 10% rule.
How are all the cycles similar and different?
Similar: Plants and animals move through.
Carbon: Goes through photosynthesis.
Nitrogen: Needs bacteria to break down N2 to a compound formed.
Phosphorus: Starts in rocks.
