4.2 Flashcards
Lipase
enzyme that breaks down lipids, found in the small intestine and pancreas
Salivary amylase
enzyme that breaks down starch, found in the small intestine and salivary glands
Pancreatic amylase
enzyme that breaks down starch, found in the small intestine and pancreas
Pepsin
enzyme that breaks down protein, found in the stomach
Trypsin
enzyme that breaks down proteins, found in the small intestine
Mouth
Digestive organ, mechanical (teeth and tongue) and chemical digestion (salivary glands)
Esophagus
Digestive organ, mechanical digestion (peristalsis)
Pharynx
Directs food from the mouth to the esophagus, digestive organ, allows for passage of food, water, and air
Stomach
Digestive organ, stores and digests food, mechanical and chemical digestion
Small intestine
Digestive organ, majority of the digestion takes place here, chemical digestion and absorption of nutrients, divided into three parts
Duodenum
First section of the small intestine, connects to the stomach
Jejunum
Second section of the small intestine
Ileum
Third section of the small intestine, connects to the colon/large intestine via the cecum
Cecum
Area where the small intestine connects to the large intestine
Colon
Large intestine, digestive organ, chemical digestion and water absorption, has four sections
Ascending colon
The first section of the colon, connects to the small intestine via the cecum
Transverse colon
Second section of the colon
Descending colon
Third section of the colon
Sigmoid colon
Fourth section of the colon, connects to the rectum
Rectum
Digestive organ, collects and stores feces, connects the colon to the anus
Liver
Accessory organ, produces bile to break down lipids
Gallbladder
Accessory organ, stores bile to be used in the small intestine
Pancreas
Accessory organ, produces several enzymes that digest starches, fats, and proteins
Villi and microvilli
where majority of the absorption happens, line the walls of the small intestine, contain blood capillaries and lymph vessels
Blood capillaries
Inside of the villi and microvilli, absorb micronutrients from carb and protein digestion
Lacteals
Lymph vessels inside the villi, absorb the micronutrients from lipid digestion
