4.2 Flashcards
What can and can’t sound travel through?
Sound can only travel through matter (solids, liquids and gases) as it requires particles to vibrate. Therefore,
sound cannot travel through a vacuum.
What does the speed of sound depend on?
The speed of sound depends on how close the particles are, therefore, sound travels faster in solids and liquids than gases.
What is the approximate speed of sound in air?
The speed of sound in air at 20C is approx. 340ms-1.
Can sound waves be reflected?
Yes, sound waves can be reflected.
How is the reflection of sound waves used in sonar equipment?
The reflection of sound waves is used in sonar equipment to calculate the distance between the vessel and other objects using the formula speed = distance/time.
