Q

Only the firearm used in an incident (suicide, accidental shooting, etc.) will be impounded as evidence by a crime scene analyst. Patrol officers may impound other firearms for safekeeping only when a threat to life or safety exists - notating the justification when doing so - and when the Public Administrator is not available. The Public Administrator may secure tangible assets of the estate, including firearms (see Nevada Revised Statute [NRS] 253.0405). The coroner investigator will not collect any firearms.

Q

Securing structure on dead body call

A

If there is no responsible person at the scene to care for the structure, and it cannot easily be secured, the coroner investigator will call their on-call company to have the structure secured. They will remain on scene for the on-call company to secure the property, if there has been no damage by police. When requested by the coroner investigator, a patrol officer may stay until the structure is secured.

Children Death Investigations

A

The Abuse/Neglect Detail lieutenant will be hotified on all child-related deaths. The Abuse/Neglect Detail will be primary investigator on most child deaths, including death by child abuse. Homicide will typically take lead if there was an act of concealment or body disposal after death. The Overdose Response Team (ORT) may assist on suspected child (teenager) overdoses and may take lead after coordination with Abuse/Neglect (see LVMPD 6.270, Overdose Investigations).
The Abuse/Neglect Detail and/or Homicide Section will respond to child deaths resulting from:
1. Non-accidental injuries
2. An intentional act
3. Injuries and/or deaths resulting from blunt force trauma, abusive head trauma or from being violently “shaken”
4. Medical neglect
5. Suicide
6. Drug overdose (Abuse/Neglect and the Overdose Response Team will coordinate the response based on the victim’s age)
