Code 1 Driving
Normal response. Must obey all traffic laws and rules
Code 2 Driving
Non Emergency- Lights only
Code 2 Driving Uses (4 answers)
- To stop violators
- Upon arriving in an area where the use of a siren may signal suspects
- To signal other motorists of traffic hazards when an officer is moving at a slow speed in traffic. Officers must drive the speed limit or below
- When approved by a sergeant or above during an authorized motorcade
Code 3 EMERGENCY LIGHTS AND SIREN
Emergency Response driving. Will not exceed posted speed limit by more than 20 mph with the exception of a pursuit.
Authorization of Code 3 Driving ( 4 Reasons)
- Imminent danger to citizens and the officer’s arrival might save lives
- Another officer requires assistance to control a volatile situation
- Reliable information exists of a felony in progress
- Pursuits
Prohibited- Code 3
Non commissioned personnel
Typing of messages and use of cell phone during code 3 driving
Vehicles that are not equipped with emergency lights and sirens
Code 3 Procedures
- Determine need for code 3 response
- Primary or first officer to initiate code 3 driving will notify communications via radio or code 3 status, activate equipment, activate code 3 button on MDT, proceed in safe manner
- Secondary officer will also notify communications and active code 3 button on mdt, and proceed in safe manner
- First and second arriving units will broadcast their arrival, determine need for continued code 3 status of additional units, advise units to continue or discontinue
ADDITIONAL UNITS WILL ACTIVATE CODE 3 BUTTON ON MDT PRIOR TO PROCEEDING CODE 3 IF THEY ARE EQUIPPED WITH AN MDT
**FIELD SUPERVISOR WILL monitor respective radio channels to ensure strict adherence to this policy and will cancel or direct code 3 responses, as warranted
