4.1-4.4 Flashcards
A form of energy produced by vibrating molecules.
Heat
Kinetic Molecular Theory
A theory that describes matter as containing molecules which are in constant motion.
Temperature
A measure of the average molecular motion of the molecules of a substance; the greater the average molecular motion, the greater temperature.
Substance
The greater average molecular motion, the greater the temperature.
Thermometer
An instrument that is used to measure temperature. Most substances expand when heated and contract when cooled.
Radiation
The process of transferring energy in the form of waves.
Wavelength
The distance from the top of one wave to the top of the next wave.
Infrared
A type of radiation that transfers heat through space.
Greenhouse effect
A process that allows short-wave radiation to pass through glass or the atmosphere, but prevents long-wave radiation from passing back out.
Conduction
The transfer of heat from one object to another object by contact.
Troposphere
Lowest layer of the atmosphere where the temperature decreases with an increase in altitude.
Stratosphere
Second lowest layer in the atmosphere where the temperature increases with an increase in altitude
Mesosphere
Third highest layer in the atmosphere where a decrease in temperature occurs with an increase in altitude.
Thermosphere
Highest layer in the atmosphere.
Convection
Process of heat transfer within a liquid or gas.
