Psychoanalysis
Freud used hypnosis and free association to access the unconscious mind where he would then show the offender a word and the offender would say the first word that comes to mind
Is psychoanalysis effective
Eysenk found that only 44% of psychoanalysis patients treated showed improvement
Cost
Psychoanalysis is costly and time consuming, so ir have never been used on a large scale
Abuse
The treatment gives the analysts the power to define what is normal/abnormal, for example freud believed that homosexuality was abnormal so this gives rise to abuse
Token economy
Works on the principal of operant learning theory, when an offendee does a positive behaviour they get a token which can be exchanged for a reward
Is the token economy effective
Once the reinforcements stop the good behaviour tends to stop as well
Aversion Therapy
Offenders are asked to think about an unacceptable sexual fantasy until they are arroused then a strongly aversive stimulus is administered, this is repeated until the thought is associated with the aversion
Is aversion therapy effective
Usually only short term success
Cognitive behavioural therapy
Think first - One to one sessions that aim to control there thoughts by teaching consequential thinking
Agressionn replacement training - moral reasoning training
Is CBT effective
Thinking skills improved, however behaviour did not
