4.1 Flashcards
What is a species?
A species is a group of organisms able to interbreed and produce fertile offspring
What is Biodiversity?
A measure of how many different species live in an ecosystem
What is a population?
All of the members of a species that live in an area
What is a community?
Two or more populations of organisms / All the organisms in a particular location
What is a ecosystem?
The interaction between a community of living organisms and their environment.
What is a Endemic species?
a species which is endemic is native to a particular region and found nowhere else
What is extinction?
when there are no members of a species left alive
What are Endangered species?
a species at risk of becoming extinct
What does Morphological mean?
to do with structural features
What does Physiological mean?
to do with the way the body works
What does Biochemical mean?
Sequence of bases in DNA and amino acids in proteins
How can we find out if organisms are different species?
interbreed the organisms
Key problems Surrounding interbreeding
- The organisms you are interested in may be dead e.g fossils or museum exhibits
- They may be the same gender
- May not breed in captivity
- Biologists may not have the time or facilities for breeding programs
- They may reproduce asexually
- They may be sexually immature
What is a niche?
The role of a species in an ecosystem.
What happens if two species occupy the same niche?
They will compete directly, the species that is best adapted will out compete the other species.
