what are the objectives of the ASK step?
- gain insight into client’s goals and interests
- explain CSEP-PATH options and confirm the scope of the assessment
- complete informed consent
- discuss pre-meeting information
- complete pre-participation screening process including the GAQ, resting HR (RHR), resting blood pressure (RBP) and collection of relevant medical history (if applicable)
define physical activity
day to day activities over resting energy expenditure (any movement at all)
define exercise
structured, over resting expenditure (intentional: aerobic, resistance etc.)
define fitness
- some measure of variable related to your ability to do something
varriable related to: power, strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, body composition
goal of step 1 ASK is:
To gain understanding of client’s:
- knowledge of the importance of physical activity to health
- primary motivation (goals) and drivers (intrinsic or extrinsic)
- level of committment (readiness for change)
- confidence that he/she can initiate and stick with physical activity plan (self-efficacy)
describe the “knowledge” goal of ASK
- get understanding of their perspective
- to learn what the client feels about exercising and the relationship to health

Describe the primary motivation goal of ASK
- trying to prove someone wrong (extrinsic)
- doing it for the love of it (intrinsic, want this)
define self-efficacy (mentioned in confidence goal of ASK)

low = not likely to do a task
what kind of questions should you ask your client?
open ended - how/what/describe to get the client talking
- show interest in client’s responses to questions and be non-judgemental
