what are the objectives of the ASK step?
- gain insight into client’s goals and interests
- explain CSEP-PATH options and confirm the scope of the assessment

- complete pre-participation screening process including the GAQ, resting HR (RHR), resting blood pressure (RBP) and collection of relevant medical history (if applicable)
define physical activity
day to day activities over resting energy expenditure (any movement at all)

structured, over resting expenditure (intentional: aerobic, resistance etc.)

goal of step 1 ASK is:
To gain understanding of client’s:
- knowledge of the importance of physical activity to health
- primary motivation (goals) and drivers (intrinsic or extrinsic)
- level of committment (readiness for change)
- confidence that he/she can initiate and stick with physical activity plan (self-efficacy)

- trying to prove someone wrong (extrinsic)

what is the role of the qualified exercise professional in pre-participation health screening
- conducts prescreening to reduce liability exposure and inform exercise program
- works within their knowledge, skills and abilities and ensures that this falls under established scope of practice
- charts info about client’s medical history (hard copy or electronic record, must be dated or signed)
- considers client’s risk of an adverse event (lower/higher risk) and takes steps to mitigate risk (assuming this falls within QEP’s scope of practice
what should prescreening include at minimum?
use of an evidence-based screening tool to identify clients who should first seek advice from another professional, determination of medical history, measurement of resting HR and BP, assessment of current PA levels
what should heart rate be under in the prescreening?
<100 bpm
what should the blood pressure be in the prescreening
<160/90 mmHg
